Welcome to Vignamaggio, where nature wastes nothing and every leftover becomes something valuable.
We’re right in the middle of the estate’s composting site—a place where garden clippings and agricultural waste are transformed into rich, natural fertilizer for our vineyards, gardens, and fields.
It all begins with green waste: things like branches, pine needles, leaves, and small bits of wood. The first step is chipping—breaking everything down into smaller pieces that are easier to work with. These wood chips are then piled into large mounds and mixed with manure from the farm.
Then comes a bit of patience and a lot of care. Over the course of a year, these piles are regularly turned with an excavator to keep them aerated, helping the natural decomposition process do its thing.
The end result? A mature compost that’s full of nutrients and ready to breathe life back into the soil. Some piles—like the one we’re looking at today—are made mostly from vineyard prunings. It’s a perfect example of how something that looks like waste can turn into humus: dark, fertile, and bursting with life.
At Vignamaggio, the cycle of nature never really stops. It just keeps renewing itself, giving back to the earth again and again.
